Take Down Tobacco National Day of Action will combat youth tobacco use

March 26, 2020

The Teen Ambassadors attend the Lewis County Health Council meeting on March 3, 2020 where Lewis County Mayor Jonah Keltner signed a proclamation declaring Wednesday, March 18 National Day of Action in Lewis County.

Lewis County Middle School students joined more than a thousand communities across the U.S. on Wednesday, March 18 for Take Down Tobacco National Day of Action. The day was organized by the Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids to help bring an end to the youth vaping epidemic.

According to the CDC, 6.2 million students in the U.S. currently use a tobacco product, including nearly a third of all high school students. Whether it's the bus to school, the parking lot, the classroom, or the bathroom, e-cigarettes are practically everywhere. Even if kids can avoid it in school, it's impossible to avoid the ads and the rows of e-cigarettes next to the candy bars at the corner store.

Parents play a critical role in the fight to stop the youth e-cigarette epidemic. For more information you can go to takedowntobacco.org for resources to help protect kids against this growing health crisis in America.

On Wednesday, March 18, the eighth grade Teen Ambassadors participated in Take Down Tobacco National Day of Action with a media campaign.

Tobacco education will continue for seventh and eighth graders during the annual Teen Safe Night program that has been rescheduled for Friday, May 8, 2020.
