LCHS Basketball

The Lewis County High School Lady Panthers and Panthers hosted the Lady Hawks and Hawks of Hampshire on Thursday night, December 16th.

The girls’ game began with a close first quarter as the teams matched baskets early and Lewis County got 6 first period points from Mya Siever to end the first quarter trailing Hampshire 11-10. The teams both picked up the defensive intensity in the second quarter as neither team could find a rhythm in a low-scoring eight-minute stretch and the Lady Hawks took a 17-15 lead in at the half. The Lady Hawks would build on their lead in the third quarter as they outscored Lewis County 13-9 in the period, with the Lady Panthers getting 5 from Siever in the third, and Lewis County trailed 30-24 as the game moved to the final eight minutes of regulation. In the fourth quarter the Lady Panthers were unable to cut into the deficit as Hampshire’s girls pulled away to a 42-30 win. Mya Siever led the Lady Panthers with 16 points, Serenity Warman added 8, Kerrigan Reeves had 4, and Desirae Warman 2.

The Hawks came out of the gate hot as they took the lead early after the tip in the opening quarter, outscoring the Panthers 12-7 as Lewis County got 5 from Rhett Middleton. The Panthers fought back in the second quarter as Middleton dropped 10 in the period and went in at the half trailing Hampshire 27-26. Bryson Clayburn was big in completing the comeback in the third quarter as he provided 10 in the third and the Panthers claimed a slim 42-40 lead as play moved on to the final eight minutes of regulation. The Panthers would close it out on a 12-9 run to end the game and seal the 45-49 win over the Hawks. Bryson Clayburn led the Panthers in the win with 19 points, Rhett Middleton added 16, Dyer Barnes 10, Hunter Smith 6, Steele Moseley 2, and Kyle Holcomb 1.

LCHS vs. Santa Fe

The Lewis County Panthers and Lady Panthers were back on the hardwood on Friday night, December 17th as they travelled to Santa Fe to take on the Lady Wildcats and Wildcats.

The Lady Panthers and Lady Wildcats took the floor for the first game of the evening, and it was the hosts from Santa Fe that jumped out quick after the tip. Mya Siever would have 4 of the Lady Panthers 7 first quarter points but the Lady Wildcats would pull out in front to a 16-7 lead at the end of the first. The pace would be fast in the second quarter as Siever would score eight more points in the period, but Santa Fe would add to their lead and the score was 34-21 at halftime. The second half would be more of the same for the Lady Panthers as Santa Fe would continue to pull away in the third despite the Lady Panthers getting 7 points from Serenity Warman in the period, and the Lady Wildcats lead grew to 49-30 heading into the fourth. The Lady Panthers would win the fourth quarter, but the lead that the Lady Wildcats had built was just too much to overcome as Lewis County fell 58-41. Mya Siever went for 16 points in the loss, Serenity Warman had 14, Kerrigan Reeves 5, Emily Bratcher 3, Desirae Watman 2, and Ruth Jennings 1.

It was the Wildcats that controlled the tempo from the tipoff in the boys’ matchup, outscoring the Panthers 28-5 in the opening quarter. The second quarter was again controlled by the Wildcats as they stretched out their lead to 50-16 at the half. Lewis County’s best quarter of the game was an 18-point third quarter , but Santa Fe never came off the throttle as their lead continued to grow in the period and the game went into the fourth quarter with the Wildcats on top by a score of 76-34. With a running clock in the final eight minutes of play the Wildcats cruised to an 88-43 win. Dyer Barnes had 11 points in the loss for the Panthers, Bryson Clayburn 10, Kyle Holcomb 5, Hunter Smith and Rhett Middleton 4 each, Steele Moseley 3, and Maddox Kellogg, Malachi Bruce, and Gage Smithson each had 2.

LCHS vs. Perry County

The Lewis County Lady Panthers and Panthers travelled to Linden on Monday, December 20th for rematches with the Perry County Lady Vikings and Vikings.

The girls’ matchup got off to a slow start as neither team was able to find scoring opportunities as Perry County took the lead late in the first quarter and led 7-5 after the first eight minutes of action. The pace remained slow in the second quarter as Mya Siever scored 8 of Lewis County’s 10 points in the period and the Lady Vikings held a 20-15 lead going in at the half. The two teams played an even 9-9 third quarter that saw the Lady Panthers get buckets from 4 different scorers and Perry County held on to a slim 29-24. The pace quickened in the final quarter of regulation as the teams went back-and-forth with the Lady Panthers cutting the lead late, but came up short as the Lady Vikings took the 46-40 win. Mya Siever had 12 to lead the Lady Panthers, Kerrigan Reeves and Serenity Warman each added 10, and Blayr Clayton, Desirae Warman, Emily Bratcher, and Aerial Whitwell each had 2.

In the boys’ game both teams came out aggressive, as the pace was back-and-forth for the first eight minutes of action. The Vikings would take an early lead at 28-20 at the end of the first, with Dyer Barnes scoring 7 points in the early going for the Panthers. The Panther offence stalled in the second as the Vikings began to pull away, with Lewis County being held to only 7 points in the period as Perry County took a 54-27 lead in at the half. The Panthers would fight back in the third quarter as Bryson Clayburn scored 8 in the period and made a slight dent in the big Viking lead, as Perry County held a 69-45 advantage moving into the final eight minutes of play. The Panthers would outscore the Vikings 19-14 in the fourth, with 8 coming from Kyle Holcomb, but fall well short of the Vikings in an 83-64 loss. Dyer Barnes was high-point man for the Panthers with 16, Bryson Clayburn added 15, Kyle Holcomb 10, Austin Shepherd 8, Wyatt Bosheers 4, Ryan Tanner 3, and Hunter Smith, Malachi Bruce, Cade Lomax, and Julian Jones each had 2.
