October 09, 1952

The State Highway Department supply house caught on fire. The building used to house tools and supplies was destroyed while a larger building used by the highway crew was saved.

Billy Crowe was stationed with the Army at Fort Benning, GA.

Howard Halfacre was serving aboard the aircraft carrier USS Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Betty Sue Neeley was named a Five Star General (employee of the month) at General Shoe.

The Hohenwald FHA announced they would sponsor an amateur talent contest on October 13.

Lewis County Schools advertised that Bethel and Little Swan school building and grounds were would auctioned to the highest bidder on October 20.

“Horizons West” and “Snake River Desperado” were the Friday and Saturday double feature at the Strand Theater.

LCHS was place on the TSSAA honor roll for its outstanding sportsmanship and unusual courtesies extended to visiting teams and officials.

Mr. and Mrs. Frank Brown celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with over 100 guests at an open house held at their home.

Members of the County Court and County Agricultural committees were honored with a dinner given at the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. The county Home Demonstration club was hostess for the occasion.

Members, coaches, and managers of the LCHS football team were honored with a fish fry given by Mr. and Mrs. Harlan Rawdon at the Oak Grove Community builders.

Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Poore won an expense paid trip for two to Spain in a contest sponsored by Borg-Warner Corporation.

Funeral services were held for Clarence Blackwell, 62; and for Herman Milam, 75.

“The Mask,” starring Paul Stevens and Anne Collins, and “Something Wild,” starring Carroll Baker and Ralph Meeker, were the Friday and Saturday double feature shown at both Highlands Drive-In and Strand Theatres.

October 12, 1972

First place winners in the annual Punt, Pass, and Kick Contest were Seth Chandler, Mackie Kilpatrick, Jeff Peery, Barry Turner, Jeff Turner, and Doug Vineyard.

Mrs. Carl Sims was promoted to assistant cashier at the Hohenwald Bank and Trust.

Clyde Carroll graduated from Navy recruit training at the Naval Training Center in Orlando, FL.

Mr. and Mrs. John Duncan announced the birth of their son, Michael Shane.

Funeral services were held for Minnie Breece, 79; George Lancaster, 74; and for Boyd Scott, 56.

“Blacula,” starring William Marshall and Denise Nicholas, and “5 Card Stud,” starring Dean Martin and Robert Mitchum, were the Friday and Saturday double feature at the Highlands Drive-In.

October 07, 1982

Senator Jim Sasser called for a halt of the FDIC’s liquidation proceedings against debtors to the Hohenwald Bank and Trust Company “until such time as a more reasonable and moderate approach” could be devised that would not “further jeopardize the economy of the local area.”

An oil painting depicting Hohenwald’s first post master, Moritz Schubert, along with a number of early settlers congregating on the street near the post office was presented to the community by Clara Miller, a granddaughter of Schubert. The painting was placed on permanent display at Lewis County Public Library.

Louis Minner was named pastor of the First Baptist Church.

Wendell Cotham and Jeff Whitwell were named LCHS Players of the Week.

The LCHS Panthers defeated Fairview with a score of 21 to 0 during their Homecoming game. Paul Rawdon carried the ball 12 times for 113 yards, 74 of them in the second quarter.

The following births were announced: Jessica Renee, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Simpson; Bradley Michael, son of Mr. and Mrs. Mike Peery; and Christopher Ryan, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Burns, Jr.

Soule Humphreys was honored for her 80th birthday with a dinner held on Coon Creek.

Mr. and Mrs. Billy Broadway celebrated their 50th anniversary with a reception held at Meriwether Lewis Park.

Funeral services were held for Bertha Curtis, 70; Lois Estes; James Hinson, 61; William Loving, 69; Cecil Moon, 47; and for Grady White, 74.

“Zapped,” starring Scott Baio and Willie Armes, and “Paradise,” starring Willie Armes and Phoebe Cates, were the Friday, Saturday, and Sunday movies showing at the Highlands Drive-in Theatre.

October 15, 1992

County Executive Terry Bunch signed a proclamation naming October 20 as Child Health Day in Lewis County.

A ground breaking ceremony was held on October 13 for the new jail to be constructed on Swan Avenue. The jail was projected to be completed in five to six months.

The Natchez Trace Corridor Association was presented a certificate of appreciation signed by Governor Ned McWherter during the Tennessee Governor’s Conference on Tourism in Chattanooga.

Alice Scheiwiller was selected as the Oktoberfest Queen.

Subway sandwich shop was set to open in Hohenwald on October 16. The franchise, located at 117 North park Avenue, was owned by Gerry and Thom Thornbury.

Judy Bunch was featured in the Teacher Feature column.

Andrew Jarrett was promoted in the U. S. Air Force to the rank of Master Sergeant.

Tracy Arledge and Holly Bates were named LCMS Women of the Week.

Kenny Carroll and Donovan McDonald were named LCMS Men of the Week.

The LCHS Panthers defeated Page with a score of 42 to 12. Randal Hankins led the team in rushing yards with 90 yards on 15 carries and led in tackles with 15.

Frances Long was recognized by Laredo/Code West for 30 years of service.

A ribbon cutting ceremony was held during the Grand Opening of Little Ivy Cottage. Winning door prizes were Marjorie Graves and Jennifer Trull.

The following births were announced: Destin Branch, son of Chad and Connie Perkinson; Robert Henry, son of Neal and Mary Hinson; Kaelan Ryan, son of Rick and Lori Brewer; Serenia Leighan, daughter of Mike Gordon and Cathy Barnes.

Soule Humphreys was honored for her 90th birthday with a reception held at the Lewis County Senior Citizens Building.

Funeral services were held for Leroy Davidson, 60; and for Donald Loudermilk, 58.

October 10, 2002

The Grand Jury cleared county officials on all charges of concerning the installation of an elevator at the Court House and the remodeling of the former Genesco building. The State Comptroller’s office had testified before the Grand Jury stating that both projects were “not administered in compliance with State statutes and generally accepted accounting practices.” There were no allegations of fraud or theft.

Lewis County School Resource Officers had additional drug charges pending in Juvenile Court for fourteen students attending LCHS.

E. W. James and Sons grocery was reported broken into with an undisclosed amount of money stolen. Burglars were then believed to have hotwired a Rentway truck as a getaway vehicle. The truck was found at the entrance of a logging road on 412.

An article about Tammie Tranovich being a “star performer” was reprinted from the naval newspaper, the Mile High Guardian.

Dana Corporation recognized employees with service awards. Receiving a certificate of appreciation were: Teresa Brewer, 25 years; Ronnie Carroll, 35 years; Carolyn Staggs, 35 years; and Floyd Staggs, 40 years.

The LCHS Panthers defeated Waverly with a score of 38 to 0. Neal King led the defense with 10 tackles. Marcus Booker had 72 yards in 8 carries. Dustin Skelton wound up with 184 all-purpose yards during the game, adding in 120 yards of punt returns on 3 tries.

Brian Brewer and Judy Baggett announced the birth of their son, Randall Cain.

Ward Frazier was honored for his 88th birthday with a celebration attended by family and friends.

Funeral services were held for Henry Alexander, 71; Mack Cothran, 79; and for Leonard Phillips, 48.
