January 19, 2023

March 18, 1943 - January 6, 2023

Joe T. Shipp, a resident of Hohenwald, passed from this world on to his eternal home in the early hours of Friday, January 6, 2023, at the Maury Regional Medical Center in Columbia.

Joe was born on March 18, 1943, to Joe H. Shipp and Hazel (Fain) Shipp in Evergreen, AL. In February of 1964, he married the love of his life and his best friend, Shirley Tharp. Together, they had nearly 59 wonderful years together. Joe was a very hard worker and he provided for his family well. He worked as a mechanic at a garment factory for a number of years and then he started logging. He worked in the log woods until he wasn't able to any longer. Joe was an avid outdoorsman. He loved to hunt and he would fish as much as he could. Some of his best days were spent on the water. He was a loving husband and father, but his best title was that of "PaPaw". Above all, Joe was a child of God. He surrendered his life to the Lord on September 4, 2022. Today, he walks on those golden streets free from all sickness and pain.

Along with his wife, Shirley Shipp of Hohenwald, he is survived by his daughters, Judy Shipp (Steve) Jones of Waynesboro and Sheryl Shipp (Jerry) Sharp of Hohenwald; son, Terry (Michelle) Shipp of Hohenwald; sister, Betty Breece of Centerville; grandchildren, Coleman (Katelyn) Thompson, Amber (Zachary) Glover, and Hallie Shipp (Kaleb Williams); and great-grandchildren, Atlas and Brody Glover, Jaxton Williams, Ila Kate Thompson, and Piper and Paisley Williams.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers.

Visitation with the family was conducted on Sunday, January 8 from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. at the McDonald Funeral Home in Hohenwald. Funeral services followed at 2:00 p.m. in the McDonald Funeral Home Chapel. Bro. James Mitchell officiated. Burial followed in the Swiss Cemetery.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Lewis County Cancer Victims Fund.
