May 21, 1953

The Fred E. Lomax American Legion Post 127 presented 41 Lewis County Korean War veterans with certificates of honor.

R. K. Roney was named vice president of the Tennessee-Kentucky Canners Association.

The following boys were listed as having left for final induction into the Army on May 18: Charles Adair, W. C. Harris, Jimmy Hensley, Larry Rodgers, Melvin Roberson, Billy Sharp, and George Voorhies.

Andrew Hinson was attending basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, TX.

Mrs. Joe Overbey was honored for her 80th birthday with visits by family, friends, and neighbors.

Funeral services were held for Lavonia Grimes, 78; Ida McClearen, 79; Ira Voorhies, 85; Earline Whitehead, 25; and for Sandra Willis, 4.

“Eight Iron Men,” starring Bonar Colleano and Arthur Franz, and “Ambush at Tommyhawk Gap,” starring John Derek and John Hodiak, were the Friday and Saturday movies showing at the Strand Theatre.

“The Half Breed,” starring Robert Young and Janis Carter, and “Rhythm Inn,” starring Jane Frazee and Kirby Grant were the Friday and Saturday movies showing at the Highlands Drive-in Theater.

May 23, 1963

A.L. Poore was presented a $600 golden key to the Detroit Tiger Stadium by George Kell, ex-Detroit Tiger and then-Tiger radio and TV announcer on May 7. The key was given to Mr. Poore because he claimed to have put the Tigers on a winning streak in 1962. Poore visited the stadium in 1962 and sent word to Rocky Colevitto, who was in the worst slump in his career, that Poore had traveled 600 miles to see him homer. The Herald added “He did and the Tigers began their move. Strange as it may seem.” Cecil Finerty and Winfred Finerty were also present for the vent and pictured with Poore and Kell in the photo published by the newspaper.

Harold Sublett purchased Harris Studio from Henry Harris and would operate the establishment as Sublett’s Studio.

Theresa Turnbow won first place in the Mid State Twirling contest held in Nashville.

Billy Lawson would be the guest speaker at the Lewis County Civic Club meeting, representing Armstrong’s Bakery and Frozen Pie Crust Company.

Billy K. Edwards was elected commander of the American Legion Fred E. Lomax Post 127.

Reverend and Mrs. C. B. Cook were honored with a reception at the Hohenwald Methodist Church. Cook was the District Superintendent for the Mt. Pleasant District of the Methodist Church, and would retire effective June 1.

Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Coble announced the birth of their son, Thomas Wayne.

The Clean Up-Paint Up-Fix Up committee advertised a “Slave Auction” on May 25 that was sponsored by the F.F.A. Farmers and Housewives were urged to come and bid on a F.F.A. boy who was guaranteed “to work an eight hour day” on any day during the following week, or money would be refunded.

“The Long Hot Summer,” starring Joanne Woodward and Paul Newman, and “War Hunt,” starring John Saxton, were the Friday and Saturday movies showing at the Highlands Drive-In and Strand Theatre.

May 24, 1973

Mayor Dol Willis signed a proclamation in honor of Memorial Day urging all patriotic citizens to wear a Buddy Poppy as evidence of their gratitude to those who risked their lives in defense of freedom.

Thirty-five Hohenwald businesses announced that they would be closed on Monday, May 28in observance of Memorial Day.

Quik-Serv Service Station was broken into and the burglar was caught running from the scene by Sheriff T.C. Carroll and city policemen Charles Sealy and Owen Anderson.

Chandra Turnbow was selected as Miss Petite Middlesboro in a pageant held in Murfreesboro.

Cordell Hull offered a $25 reward for the return of a lost model airplane with radio equipment.

The Lewis County Jaycees announced they would sponsor a 25-mile canoe race June 24 and another June 30 on the Buffalo River.

Dean Pigg was the $300 winner in the jackpot drawing held at Piggly Wiggly.

Jim and Kathy Brasfield announced the birth of their son, James Richard.

Funeral services were held for W.H. Cupples, 44; Addie Davis, 94; Mrs. Ollie Johnston, 83; and for Woodrow Tatum, 66.

Jim Darden advertised that the Western Auto Associate Store was under new management, “but with the same friendly people to serve you.”

“Lady and the Tramp” and “Asylum,” starring Peter Cushing and Britt Ekland, were the Friday and Saturday movies showing at the Highlands Drive-In.

May 26, 1983

Mayor Guy Nicholson signed a proclamation in honor of Memorial Day urging all patriotic citizens to wear a Buddy Poppy as evidence of their gratitude to those who risked their lives in defense of freedom.

Approximately 350 to 400 cartons of cigarettes and $130 in change was taken from Griner’s Shop Rite store by burglars who gained entrance by removing blocks at the back of the building.

Boston Industrial Products of Hohenwald was participating in a “Made in Tennessee” product exhibition at the Tennessee State Museum.

Thirty-one bridges in Lewis County were damaged by heavy rainfall and flooding.

Christy James won third place at the Outstanding Student Competitive Contest held at the State F.H.A. Convention in Nashville.

Carlos Gunter was honored with an appreciation dinner at Lomax Church of Christ. Gunter served as assistant minister of the church.

Jimmy Miller was selected as Most Valuable Player on the 1983 LCHS baseball team. He was presented a MVP plaque by David Bell, President of the Athletic Booster Club.

Devin Williams won the grand prize in the American Cancer Society talent show held in Lawrenceburg on May 6 and 7.

Members of the Farm Structures Class at LCHS constructed a gym set for use by students at Hohenwald Elementary. Materials for the project cost $700 and were provided by the PTO. Principal June Baldwin said it would have cost $5,000 to purchase the equipment ready made.

The following births were announced: Kristen Honore, daughter of 1st Lt. Andrew and Andriea Moss; Jennifer Lynn, daughter of Richard and Lynn Walton; and Donald Blackburn, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hulon Dunn, Jr.

Funeral services were held for Ruth Kallas, 61; and for Eunice Morton.

A triple feature of “Norma,” starring Jules Hamel and Geert de Jong, “Fanny Hill,” starring Lisa Foster and Oliver Reed, and “Bottoms Up,” starring Alena Penz and Alexander Grill, were the weekend movies showing at the Highlands Drive-in Theatre.

May 27, 1993

A benefit for Sheriff Larry Hensley was planned for May 29 to help with his medical expenses after being shot while on duty.

A Sunbeam delivery truck overturned on Ridgetop Road, east of Swan Creek. The driver was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown from the vehicle and trapped in the ditch under the truck.

Mrs. Tennessee America, Kathy Reynolds, visited Main Attraction beauty salon on May 21.

The Hohenwald Flying Club hosted a combination fly-in and cookout at the Baker airfield on May 15.

Winners in the “What Lewis County Means to Me” Essay Contest sponsored by the Lewis County Sesquicentennial Committee were Crystal L. Smith, 8th grade and Morgan Lomax 7th grade.

Sandy Baker had a poem titled “Entering In” published in the “The Coming of Dawn” anthology published by the National Library of Poetry.

Robert Turnbo, Jr. and Trista Bailey announced the birth of their son, Robert Wesley.

Damon Pugh was honored for his 80th birthday with a family reunion including his brother and children.

Funeral services were held for Sylvia Barber, 65; Edna Barham, 89; Billy Brown, 31; Lou Ann Butler, 35; Addie Harris, 72; Garvis Hensley, 61; and for Aline Medthun, 82.

May 22, 2003

Shelia Carroll, assistant director of the Hohenwald/Lewis County Economic Development Commission, was presented with a plaque of appreciation by LCHS principal Benny Pace for her work with the student enrichment program.

Police Officer Memorial Day was observed at City Hall on May 15.

Signs were erected on the Natchez Trace Parkway declaring the Parkway as part of the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail due to the Meriwether Lewis Monument marking the final encampment of the great explorer Meriwether Lewis.

A grave stone was replaced at the grave of Confederate Civil War veteran James Daniel Murphree in Newtown Cemetery at Napier in Lewis County.

Heavy rains caused approximately $250,000 in damage to county roads and bridges.

Andy and Samantha Webb announced the birth of their daughter, Reagan Lane.

Funeral services were held for Lela Bailey, 86; Josephine Davis, 90; and for William Mayberry Iv, 51.
