Life As Art, Pure Not Simple

By Elissa Tracy

One of the most effective ways to create an illusion of spaciousness in a room is by painting it white. Not only does it make ceilings appear higher, but it also imparts a clean and elegant simplicity to the space. However, the process of selecting the perfect white paint color for your home is far from simple. In fact, the world of white is a complex and nuanced realm, with a variable of undertones that can dramatically transform the mood and ambiance of a room. From cool blues to warm yellows, delicate pinks to earthy grays, white is as vibrant and expressive as any other color on the palette.

So, how does one navigate this vast ocean of whites and choose the ideal shade for their home? The key lies in considering the existing elements in the space. Do warm-toned or cool-toned furnishings dominate the room? Are you aiming for a crisp, modern aesthetic or a cozy, rustic atmosphere? By understanding these factors, you can identify the right undertone that harmonizes with your overall design vision.

Once you’ve determined your preferred undertone, it’s time to explore the wide array of white paint selections available. Joanna Gaines from Magnolia Home popularized Sherwin-Williams Alabaster SW7008, a warm white that complements farmhouse-style interiors without veering into a yellow undertone. Another versatile white color is Shoji White SW7042 by Sherwin Williams, which acts as a chameleon, seamlessly blending with both cool and warm tones. It imparts a tranquil, spa-like quality to any space.

When it comes to interior spaces, whites continue to reign supreme, creating an airy and light-filled atmosphere. A popular trend is the use of warm whites with a hint of pink or beige undertones, such as “Simply White” or “Swiss Coffee,” which infuse living areas and bedrooms with a cozy and inviting ambiance. On the other end of the spectrum, cooler whites with blue or gray undertones, like “Decorator’s White” or “Chantilly Lace,” evoke a clean and contemporary feel, making them ideal for kitchens and bathrooms.

However, one crisp true bright white that often goes unnoticed in magazines is SW Fundamental White. Its understated elegance makes it a personal favorite of mine, and I would paint everything in this shade if I had the chance! I also really like the look of a white called “Snowbound”, it’s a bit softer than Fundamental White. As far as finish, my go to has always been an eggshell finish. It’s simply a personal preference.

Remember, selecting the right white is not a one-size-fits-all endeavor. It requires a process of experimentation, trial, and error. Don’t hesitate to test paint swatches on your walls and observe how they interact with different lighting conditions throughout the day. The subtle shifts in undertones can make all the difference in creating a harmonious and visually captivating space.

So, my friends, as you embark on your color selection journey, embrace the world of whites and its captivating undertones. Allow yourself to be inspired by the ever-evolving trends and insights offered by notable publications. Paint your home with strokes of creativity and watch as it transforms into a sanctuary that reflects your unique style and personality.

Until next week, may your artistic adventures be filled with color and inspiration.
