Sew Basic

UT Extension

The UT Extension office recently hosted a Sew Basic camp for students in grades 4th-8th. Sew Basic was a project designed to educate children with an art that is significant in improving self-sufficiency skills crucial to their economic well-being.

Sew Basic was made possible with the help of grant funds through the Juanita Fasola Foundation. Juanita Fasola was the first married female extension agent in Tennessee to break the practice of single women being employed as home demonstration agents in 1914. Each year Extension agents are offered opportunities to apply for grant funds through this foundation.

Students engaged in a variety of activities that incorporated life skills including sewing, ironing, mending clothing, and creating simple pieces. Students learned the basics of both hand and machine sewing, including safe practices while using various tools. Each student received a certificate of completion along with some great door prizes and their own miniature sewing kit to take home.
