One Day at a Time

Series: One day at a time | Story 139

April 25, 2024

Well it is a beautiful morning here in our little valley. It was a little cool on the front porch at 46 degrees but we have been getting a little rain, but now the sun is out and shining.

The cats were ready for their breakfast, they ate and have now gone to take a nap. Bob is washing the breakfast dishes and making the kitchen spotless. In a few minutes we will have our coffee but we will probably not sit out on the porch because it is a little too cool this morning.

For breakfast I made a big pan of cathead biscuits and some brown country gray to go with them, and of course we also had some good country eggs.

We have had another busy week but it has been a good one. Bob’s sister and niece came from West Tennessee and visited, we all sat on the front porch and got to enjoy the nice weather, and then we went and got lunch and I made us an apple cobbler for dessert and we had ice cream, it sure was a good visit and day.

Our daughter Linda came over and ate lunch one day, we had homemade soup and fried cornbread.

Bobby washed off the porches and the walks, he said he will have to pressure wash them soon, they sure did get dirty over the Winter and from the things coming off the trees this Spring.

We sure enjoy our porches, during most days it seems like there is always a gentle breeze blowing across the front porch, and the swings and rocking chairs are always a comfortable place to sit.

From our front porch we can see our neighbors cows out in their pasture. The cows have been grazing on the fresh green grass and some of the cows have baby calves. The baby calves love to run and play and have a good time while the momma cows eat, the momma cows also keep a very close eye on their baby calves and they will get upset if their babies get too far away from them.

We were out running errands the other day and saw some pink Dogwood trees, they are so pretty. We also saw some Honeysuckles blooming and lots of different kinds of flowers blooming out and we saw some gardens coming out.

Maybe this last cold spell will be our last one until Fall gets here, I think those last few cold days are called Blackberry Winter. It looks like our blueberries and apples have made it through the cold because they are loaded with little berries and apples.

Bobby seen a hummingbird on the 15th and he put out their feeders. I thought it was a little early for hummingbirds but I guess everything is ready for springtime. Bobby said if anymore come in that he wants them to find the feeders, he says the more birds we have around now then the less bugs we will have this Summer, plan ahead.

At night we have been seeing lightning bugs and on the 18th we heard some whippoorwills, we have not been hearing them much over the last few years and I do not think I even heard one last year at all.

We have started seeing a few squirrels again. There is still lots and lots of acorns and nuts on the ground down by the creek, there just was not any critters to eat them during the Fall and Winter, it was just like something went through and got all the wild animals. Bobby said he saw a deer run across our road as he was going out the other day and that was the first one he has seen around here in a while.

We are looking forward to nicer weather and being able to get outside and get some things done. Bobby is going to have to do some painting and pressure washing and cleaning up, all those things that are hard to do when the weather is cold or wet.

Speaking of cleaning and washing and getting things done, I have laundry to do and I have got to fix lunch, I do not know what I am going to fix yet but I know I have to make some iced tea and also a big skillet of good brown cornbread, that will be a good start.

I am not going to worry about tomorrow and I am going to take one day at a time because God still has it all under control and He is the light at the end of the tunnel.

God bless,

Evelyn “E.T.” Trevathan
