The nursing scholarship program was selected as the major project for the Tennessee Elk Association in 1956 as a means to relieve a critical shortage of nurses in Tennessee.
The need for nursing scholarships is just as important today. These individuals have to be pursuing a four year degree in the nursing field. Currently, the awards are for $2000.00 per year including the renewals. The top six recipients in the State of Tennessee will be awarded $2500.00 each year.
This year the Lewis County Elk Lodge scholarship committee that consists of Carole Hankins, Brandy Bennett, Lisa Tibbs and Martha Price had the honor to go to Madison Tennessee the weekend of March 14th and help judge the nursing scholarships at the state level. Twenty-six scholarships were received and fourteen scholarships are being awarded this year totaling over $100,000. There were a variety of judging stations from neatness, financial need, letters, grades, ACT scores, desire, volunteering, and the orderly of the application.
The Lewis County Elk Lodge sent in five really amazing scholarships and the scholarship committee was told at the state level that the state of Tennessee Elk Association had more scholarship applicants then ever in years past and that the judging scores has never been this close. It was only a 200 point difference out of over a 1000 points from the top number one scholarship recipient to the 26th scholarship applicant.
The scholarship recipients will be formerly notified in April or May by mail. The award will be paid directly to the student's school of choice. The student then may draw against an account for allowable expenses such as tuition, books, lab fees and dormitory expenses.
Out of those fourteen awarded scholarships three scholarships came from the Lewis County Elk lodge. The local nursing scholarship recipients are Chanley Baker, Kevin Green and Stephanie Carroll.
Ms. Baker was in the top six in the state for the scholarship recipients and will be awarded $2500 each year that she maintains her grades and Mr. Green and Mrs. Carroll will receive $2000 each year that she maintains her grades.
The Lewis County Elk Lodge will be accepting nursing scholarship applications again starting in October of this year for individuals wishing to pursue a four year nursing degree.
