December 18, 1952

Annie Mai Edwards, Doris Floyd, and Linda Hickerson appeared on the WSM radio program, “You and Your Home”.

Members of the Hohenwald Volunteer Fire Department and their spouses were treated to a chicken banquet at LCHS. Musical entertainment was provided by the LCHS choir ensemble.

A turkey shoot was planned for December 20 at the Flatwoods community.

M.V.A. Motor Company advertised that customers need only call them and they would pick you their cars, service it as they directed, and return it in the same day with no extra charge for the pick up service.

The following births were announced: Alexander Guy, son of Mr. and Mrs. Guy Petway; and Alan Douglas, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Peery.

Funeral services were held for Dock Brewer, 60.

“Denver & Rio Grande,” starring Edmond O’Brien and Sterling Hayden, and “Old Oklahoma Plains,” starring Rex Allen and Slim Pickens, were the Friday and Saturday double feature showing at the Strand Theatre.

In regional news: A trial court judge in Alabama called for the return of the whipping post for criminals as part of a drastic new plan for protecting the “rights of the law-abiding people.”

December 20, 1962

J.H. Warf was appointed State Commissioner of Education by Governor-elect Frank Clement. Concerning Warf’s appointment, Clement stated, “I have received literally hundreds of letters from college presidents, school superintendents, teachers and from those who simply have the best interest of the Tennessee school system at heart, recommending that I appoint Mr. Warf to this position.”

Out-of-town judges would judge the annual Home Lighting Contest sponsored by Meriwether Lewis Electric Cooperative on December 21. Homes in Hohenwald and within one miles of the city limits were eligible for entry.

Mary Smith resigned her position as County Home Agent to accept a similar position in Giles County.

The All Tennessee Valley Conference team was honored with a dinner at the Hohenwald Recreation and Golf Club. Named to the squad from LCHS were Cecil Baker, Keith Rodgers, G.W. Stephens, and Chuck Stowe.

The annual Big Brothers paper sale netted $1,800, the largest amount ever raised in Lewis County at that time. Sixty-three legionnaires and their friends worked in the house to house canvas of Lewis County.

The LCHS Pantherettes defeated Clifton with a score of 48 to 36. Wilma Roth and Glenda Floyd both tied for top scorer with 18 points each.

Mrs. Jesse Cameron was honored for her birthday with a surprise party at her home with Mrs. Joe Duckworth and Mrs. Ben Stringer serving as co-hostesses.

The Herald announced that the newspaper would not be published the following week so that staff could take off and enjoy the Christmas holiday season. Publication would resume on January 3, 1963.

The following births were announced: Debra Kay, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gene Barber; Kimberly Joy, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Bullion; and Karen Delphine, daughter of Mr.a nd Mrs. Marshall Keeton.

Funeral services were held for Annie Cotham, 75; Vestal Churchwell, 49.

“Saskatchewan,” starring Alan Ladd and Shelley Winters; and “Escape from Zahrain,” starring Sal Mineo, Jack Warden, and Yul Brenner, were the Friday and Saturday double feature shown at both Highlands Drive-In and Strand Theatres.

December 21, 1972

William Marbet was promoted to Assistant Cashier at First Farmers and Merchants National Bank.

A New Year’s dance was scheduled at the Hohenwald Golf and Recreation. The “Atlantic Eastern,” a seven-piece band from Dickson, would play.

Cub Scout Troop 322, Den 1 visited the Perry County Nursing Home to sing Christmas carols, and deliver fruit and candy.

Jerry McDonald was selected to participate in an East German Border Orientation Tour in Germany while serving with the 2nd Infantry Division Artilleray.

Funeral services were held for Nannie Brewer, 58; Ray Carroll, 37; and for William Hinson, 79.

“Sweet Sugar,” starring Phyllis Davis and Ella Edwards, and “The Sin of Adam and Eve,” starring Jorge Rivero and Candy Wilson, were the Friday and Saturday movies showing at the Highlands Drive-In.

December 16, 1982

Five investors applied to charter a new bank to be known as the Bank of Lewis County with assets of $500,000. An opening date was set for February 1. William Bates was scheduled to be manager of the new bank.

Reverend Carleton Thackston was elected president of the Lewis County Ministerial Association.

W.E. Christian, Jr. killed a 200-pound boar while hunting at the State Bear and Boar Hunt at Tellico Plaines.

The Buffalo River Coon Hunters Club held a coon hunt on November 28. Walt Runions with his dog, Bingo, received first place honors.

Judge Billy Townsend was seeking youth service volunteers to serve on the Lewis County Foster Care Review Board or as youth guidance officers.

The Centerville Levi Strauss Community Involvement Team presented two checks totaling $2,100 to the Lewis County Senior Citizens Center to go towards a new bus and beautification improvements of the center.

The following births were announced: Bradley Dwayne, son of Dewayne and Carol Creasey; Joni Mashaya, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Stephens; and Joseph Andrew, son of Mr. and Mrs. Steve Ellis.

Aaron Duncan was honored for his 90th birthday with a surprise party attended by family and friends.

Funeral services were held for Les Anderson, 85; Grace Hale; and for Ellison (Slim) Runions.

“National Lampoon’s Class Reunion,” starring Gerrit Graham, Michael Lerner and Misty Rowe, was the weekend movie showing at the Highlands Drive-in Theatre.

December 17, 1992

Chad Spears was chosen as Most Valuable Defensive Lineman in District 9AA. He was also named to the All District, All Mid-State, and All State teams. He had 59 tackles and two quarterback sacks during the 1992 season.

Kelly Myers was featured in the “Teacher Feature” column.

Annette Williams was recognized for 30 years of service with Laredo/Code West.

James Fielder enlisted in the U.S. Army.

Freddie Roth was honored with a birthday dinner at his home.

Wal-Mart donated $470 to the Hohenwald Lions Club. The contribution was based on a percentage of Black Friday sales on November 27.

Sonic Drive-In partnered with Mothers Against Drunk Driving, and Dr. Pepper to blanket Hohenwald with red ribbons as part of their “Tie One on for Safety” campaign.

The following births were announced: Trent Ray, son of Gerald and Christa Mash; and Garrett Lee, son of Danny and Michelle Ogg.

Freddie Roth was honored for his birthday with a dinner at his home attended by family and friends.

Funeral services were held for Cora Galloway, 80; Claude Spurgeon, 72; and for Margaret Webb, 56.

December 16, 2002

Dick Booz served as Grand Marshall for the 2002 Christmas Parade. The theme for the parade was “The True Meaning of Christmas.”

State Representative Joey Hensley was elected as Assistant Republican Floor Leader in the Tennessee House of Representatives.

The LCHS Lady Panthers defeated Marshall County with a score of 46 to 37. Britni Tenison reached the 1,000-point mark for the season during this game, and was the top scorer for the team with 13 points and 7 rebounds.

The LCHS Panthers defeated Marshall County with a score of 38 to 32. Tim Watson led the team in scoring with 9 points and 5 rebounds.

Kelby Reeves was crowned Queen in the 7 to 9-year-old category at the Lobelvillle Heritage Festival Beauty Pageant.

District Attorney and Coast Guard Reserve Captain Ron Davis completed a three-year tour of duty as Commanding Officer of the U. S. Coast Guard Port Security Unit 308 at Gulfport, MS.

Sadie Owens was honored for her 92th birthday with a celebration hosted by friends.

Funeral services were held for Ethel Crowe, 94; Don Lindsey, 55; Brownie Owen, 83; and for Mattie Skelton, 91.
