FOCUS ON VIBRANT HEALTH

Series: FOCUS ON VIBRANT HEALTH | Story 9

Principle 10 of good

nutrition: Eat plant

and animal foods raised on healthy soils

Foods from healthy soils are far more nutritious. Unfortunately many soils today are depleted of critical minerals that were once abundant. Modern agriculture uses chemical fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides. Beef are finished in filthy, crowded feed lots. Chickens are stacked on top of each other, pigs can barely turn around, and neither see the sunshine. Most of these animals receive hormones and antibiotics and other unnatural chemicals. These practices do not produce healthy food.

What is healthy soil? It is high in minerals and has a healthy food web of organisms. This is the microbiome of the soil. Healthy soil does not receive herbicides or pesticides. Healthy soils have organic matter and manure added to them regularly and are used in ways to preserve their health. This may include practices such as growing cover crops and not tilling.

Foods from healthy soils contain more vitamins and minerals. They have a healthier omega 3:6 ratio. These are things that are critically important for the health of the plants and animals, and your health as an omnivore that eats these foods.

What can you do? Find sources for your foods that have been raised on healthy soils. Raise them yourself, and take good care of the animals and the land. Choose local foods from a farmer that you know and trust. Find biodynamic and regenerative farms. Many will send their products by mail if you cannot find a farm close by. Organic is generally better, but the practices used by big commercial farms are not ideal. They will likely have less toxins, but may not be much higher in nutrients.
