Without water you cannot survive more than a few days. If you are reading this, you probably have access to water that is not contaminated with human waste that can make you acutely sick. But does your water contain toxins that may cause chronic illness? Likely, if you have “city” water. It will at least contain chlorine, and perhaps fluoride. Depending on the source, it may also contain agricultural and industrial chemicals. These are less likely if you have your own well or spring and you live in a rural area.
If you are lucky enough to live near a clean spring, you could fill your own containers. And you can buy spring water. One brand is Mountain Valley Spring Water. Choose the plain water in glass. You should always avoid water in plastic, whether you buy it or bottle it yourself for travel. To remove toxins from your drinking water, you can use a gravity drip filter such as Berkey. There are also filters available for your shower, and those that use vitamin C are good. If you have fluoride in your water, you are going to have to use a reverse osmosis system to remove it. This type of filter is very good at removing toxins, but it also removes the beneficial minerals and is very damaging to the structure of the water.
You can remineralize your water by adding a pinch of unrefined salt. You want a salt that is low in sodium chloride and high in a variety of minerals, such as Celtic sea salt and Baja Gold. To restructure your water, you can simply stir it clockwise and counterclockwise several times. There are several devices available that can help, some of which mimic the motion of water over rocks in a creek. The Analemma water wand is my favorite. You simply stir your water with it.
How much water should you drink? That depends on how healthy your diet is, the temperature, and the amount of sweating you are doing. Generally, you should drink when you are thirsty, and enough to urinate about every 2-3 hours. Your body makes water from the foods you eat. Traditionally people drank local lactofermented beverages, such as kombucha or kvass. Before modern bottled soft drinks, these types of beverages were common. You can also drink fresh made fruit and vegetable juices.
