Well it is a cool Fall morning here in our little valley. The colors of the trees have been so pretty, this year we have had a beautiful Fall. We have had some cooler temperatures and got a few showers of rain and some wind, and now the leaves have really been falling off the trees. The cats were ready for their breakfast this morning. They know when it is cool out that they get a little bowl of warm milk, so they were sitting at the door waiting. We have been enjoying this Fall weather, Bob and Bobby each have went walking almost everyday....
On Saturday, October 26, 2024, the Lewis County Public Library and Archives hosted its annual Not-So-Spooky Story Time event. Families of all ages participated in an engaging session featuring Halloween-themed stories. Children enjoyed dancing to songs about pumpkins and trick-or-treating. In keeping with the story theme, participants created bear treat bags and dressed the bears as princesses, superheroes, pirates, sharks, and more. Ms. Jaimee guided the children on a tour of the library to...
Well it is a quiet and peaceful morning here in our little valley. It is a little too cool to sit on the porch swing this morning. Even though it was cool the cats were up early for their breakfast, but now they have went back to their beds. It is a little early for the cats to start their day because they did not get much sleep last night. About 3 AM I heard a noise on the front porch and I got up to see what it was, and there was two small raccoons playing on the porch. The cats were out of their beds and wide awake, sitting there watching...
As November approaches, many cultures around the world turn to the act of remembrance. This season is marked by days like All Saints’ Day, Día de los Muertos, and Veterans Day, where honoring ancestors, loved ones, and memories becomes a spotlight. Through art, we have a universal language that allows us to explore and preserve these memories, bridging generations and uniting us in shared experiences of loss, heritage, and reverence. All Saints’ Day, observed on November 1st, is a significant time of reflection in Christian traditions, hono...
My brother and I just experienced what I believe was our longest one-on-one, face-to-face chat ever. (Yes, even longer than the long-ago heart-to-heart conversation highlighted by “Throw another dart at me…and another…nyah nyah, missed me...”) We had our differences growing up (maybe I shouldn’t have been so dismissive of his taste in music and TV shows, and maybe I was overly sensitive when he named a cow after my first girlfriend); but it was comforting to be able to talk in a civil manner ab...
“A mask tells us more than a face” -OSCAR WILDE Surrealism, an art movement born in the early 20th century, sought to unlock the power of the unconscious mind, blending dreamscapes with reality in ways that often disturbed, confused, and enchanted audiences. With its foundation in shock value, surprise, and the exploration of inner fears, surrealism shares a curious connection with Halloween, a holiday equally rooted in fear, fantasy, and the unknown. Surrealist painters like Salvador Dalí, René Magritte, and Max Ernst created worlds that...
According to the National Retail Federation (motto: “Proudly middlemansplaining since 1911”), Americans set a Halloween spending record of $12.2 billion in 2023. (And that didn’t even include earplugs for muffling the seasonal onslaught of “spooktacular,” “boo-tiful,” “to die for” and other undead “dad jokes” shambling in from Father’s Day.) But, citing research from Lending Tree, “Newsweek” magazine says 59 percent of Halloween spenders plan to scale back purchases this year because of tighte...
Well it is a cold and frosty morning here in our little valley. We had just a little heat on this morning, but we have not built a fire in the old wood heating stove yet. It has been chilly in the mornings and we have had a few big frost, but as soon as the sun comes up it starts warming up. Soon the leaves will really change colors and start falling off the trees, right now they already getting some pretty colors to them. The cats are always extra hungry on these cold mornings. When it is cold out they get a little bowl of warm milk, they real...
We are in the fall season of the year, and it shows everywhere you look, the leaves are falling at a very fast rate and the trees that shed will soon be bare. A time of year that many do not like because it is the death of many plants and green scenery. My mother never liked fall she said it made her sad to see all the beauty of the earth so drab. I guess we could look at it that way, I like to think of it as a resting time for the earth to begin in Spring to create a new and beautiful world as God created it. The temperatures have been in the...
Thanks to the L.C. Herald for printing them and “congrats” to Crystal Nash for her October 10th and 17th articles of Meriwether Lewis’s birthplace in Ivy, Virginia and the Legend of Fotheringay linked to William Clark. I felt as if I was along on the adventure. I don’t even mind washing the ink off my fingertips, going in for a second reading. Well deserved award, Crystal. Also, be on the lookout for J. McDonald pieces. Marsha Perkins, Summertown...
Well it is another peaceful morning here in our little valley, it is very still and quiet this morning. There is a cool little breeze blowing across the front porch, but it is very comfortable. These are probably some of the last warm mornings that we will be able to sit out on the porch, soon it will start turning chilly and then it will be too cold for us to sit out on the porch in the mornings. Soon in the mornings we will be having big frosts, and all the tree leaves will change colors and then they will start falling off. The cats were up...

I’m going to decorate my room with them.” - Anne Shirley, Anne of Green Gables So, inspired by autumn and the spirit of Anne Shirley, I have come up with a few ideas to help you enjoy October! Bake an Anne-I...
My handy-dandy “column topic radar” lit up when I encountered an internet article called “12 Phrases You’re Using That Make You Sound Unprofessional.” (This is not to be confused with the equally intriguing online article titled “12 Phrases That Would’ve Been 13 Phrases If That %$#* Black Cat Hadn’t Revved Up My Superstitious Streak.”) The author helpfully pointed out a number of utterances that can make you appear immature, unfocused, unhelpful, inflexible, whiney, too casual or too SOMETHING...
Well it is a beautiful Fall morning here in our little valley. It is still warm enough this morning to sit out on the front porch, but it will not be many more days until it will be too cold outside and then we will be sitting near the old wood heating stove. We are still enjoying watching a few hummingbirds at their feeders, somebody told me they normally leave around the last of August but this year they are still here in October. I guess the weather has changed over the last few years. The cats were here early this morning for their...

Did you know… “That dogs have an incredible sense of hearing? They hear at much higher frequencies than people. Science based research indicates their frequency ranges are much greater than humans. Dogs hear between 67-45,000 Hz and humans hear between 64-23,000 Hz. Dogs like humans hear best at 4,000Hz, and they can zero in on where the sound is coming from by moving their ears and comparing the time delay between them”! So, there is no need to holler at your best friend1”... “he may be listening to something else, and needs to determine...

The past week has been a terrible week for storms and rain, in many areas of the southern United States there has been lots of damage from the hurricanes that came onto the land. There was also the loss of many lives and much damage to buildings, homes, roads and many other things. We pray for all those in the areas where these storms struck. Even with all the rain that fell in the area the creeks never got up, I guess it was because we were so low on water levels from the drought during the last several weeks. Those I know which are sick...
Well it is a cool and windy morning here in our little valley. We sure have been getting some good and much needed rain, there has not been no real heavy downpours but steady and slow rain. Even the creeks are starting to get water in them. With the rain, wind and cooler temperatures it sure has felt more and more like Fall. It was a little cool last night so I put the cats a small blanket out and they were snuggled down into it this morning. There were not as many hummingbirds at their feeders this morning, maybe it is because of the cooler...
My parents used to talk about the county’s farmers streaming into town on Saturday and shopping until midnight. From my own childhood, I still remember Petula Clark’s then-new song “Downtown” blaring from the radio at my hometown’s first Dollar General Store (located about a block from the public square). During junior high, I sketched a map of all the businesses and landmarks surrounding the courthouse. (You’re right; that venture should have been a genuine chick magnet, but somehow I g...
“Hey, Jo, I have been worried about sending my children to school, with all the threats out there” Have you looked into the school’s safety policy? It might help to know what measures are in place, like security systems, lock down, drills, or communication plan for emergencies. If you’re unsure, reaching out to the school or attending a meeting can give you a clearer idea of how they’re working to keep students safe. Sometimes, understanding the steps being taken, can ease some of the worry. “In loco parentis” means that when kids are at s...
